Tucked away in the hills of West Kelowna, Niche Wine Company isn’t just a winery—it’s a farm and a way of life. Here, on this little slice of paradise, we’ve embraced the rhythm of the seasons and the idea that wine is actually FUN! Founded by James and Joanna Schlosser, Niche is where the love of farming meets the art of winemaking and where everyone is welcome.

Our farm sits 620 meters above the valley floor, at an altitude that offers more than just stunning views. This is where the magic happens—where the soil, the sun, and the wind come together to create something truly special. We’ve always believed that great wine begins in the vineyard, but here at Niche, it goes deeper than that. This farm is the heart of everything we do.

james schlosser

rooted in the land

James grew up on this farm, learning the ropes from his parents, who first planted grapes here back in the ’90s. The connection he feels to this land is palpable. For James, farming isn’t just a job; it’s a calling. And every bottle of Niche wine is a tribute to the land and community that raised him.

James received his Masters degree in Oenology and Viticulture from Brock University in Niagara. This, followed by another 15 years of winemaking experience, has taught James that although it’s important to be attentive throughout the process, ultimately, wine is an expression of place and time.

With a background as an innovative global marketer and a deep love for the wine and tourism industry in BC, she brings both vision and heart to everything we do. Her passion for sustainability, inclusivity, and connection is reflected in every label, event, and story we share. A proud member of the Squamish Nation, Joanna leads with intention—making sure our work not only resonates with people but reflects the place we’re proud to call home.

farming with purpose

Our vineyard might be small, but it’s mighty. At this altitude, the grapes ripen slowly, developing flavours that are as complex as they are compelling. But farming here isn’t just about growing grapes—it’s about embracing the challenges and the rewards of working in harmony with nature. From the moment we plant a vine to the day we harvest the fruit, we’re guided by the belief that farming is an act of love, respect, and patience.

And it’s not just the grapes we’re focused on. We’ve been expanding our farm, adding new elements that reflect our commitment to sustainability and our passion for the land. We’ve introduced a growler program to cut down on waste, and our new Outside Inn Cabins built with sustainable ‘sea-can’ construction offer guests a chance to immerse themselves in farm life—because we believe that once you experience the farm, you’ll understand why we think it’s so incredibly special.
